Useful Terms

There are a lot of various terms that can be used when talking about racing, I myself will be using a fair amount of these in the analysis so I have made a list of the most notable terms just in case anyone is unfamiliar with anything. If there is anything else people would like explained please contact me either on twitter or via the email provided on the contact page.

Apprentice - Young jockey who is tied to a particular trainer whilst learning the trade, when racing against professional jockeys apprentices will receive a weight allowance for their inexperience.

Banker - This is a selection that is fancied very strongly and will often be the anchor of many people's days betting.

Bumper -  Term used for a flat race for jumps horses, they are used as a platform to offer horses racing experience before they go over hurdles or fences.

Colt - Male horse of up to 4 years that has not been gelded.

C&D - Course and distance.

Dam - Mother of a horse.

Draw - The number of a stall that a horse has been drawn in, applying to flat races only.

E/W - Each way bet.

Filly - Female horse of up to 4 years.

Gelding - Male horse that has been castrated.

Going - Used to describe the condition of the ground at a racecourse (heavy, soft, good to soft, good, good to firm, firm).

Handicap - A race where each horse is given a certain weight to carry, which in theory means that each horse has an equal chance in the race.

Listed - A race that is just short of group level but above that of handicap or conditions level.

Maiden - A horse that has not won a race.

Mare - Female horse aged five and above.

Odds on - Odds where the amount of profit expected back is less than the stake.

Penalty - The weight added to the handicap weight of a horse.

Selling race - A race where the winner is sold immediately after.

Sire - A horses father.
